SONIC YOUTH: KOOL THING Single Album (1990)

SONIC YOUTH: KOOL THING Single Album cover

Kool Thing is a song by Sonic Youth, released in June 19, 1990 in the United States (as a promotional single) and September 1990 in Europe, as the first single from their sixth studio album Goo. The song was inspired by an interview bassist/singer Kim Gordon conducted with LL Cool J for Spin. Although he is never mentioned by name, the song’s lyrics contain several references to LL Cool J. Gordon‘s lyrics that make reference to several of the rapper’s works, including the single I Can’t Live Without My Radio and the album Walking with a Panther. She also repeats the line “I don’t think so”, which appears in LL Cool J‘s Going Back to Cali. Chuck D also contributed spoken vocals to the song.

Kool Thing by Sonic Youth Lyrics

Kool Thing sittin’ with a kitty
Now you know you’re sure lookin’ pretty
Like a lover not a dancer
Superboy take a little chance here
I don’t want to, I don’t think so
I don’t want to, I don’t think so
Kool Thing let me play it with your radio
Move me, turn me on, baby-o
I’ll be your slave
Give you a shave
I don’t want to, I don’t think so
I don’t want to, I don’t think so
Yeah, tell’em about it
Hit’em where it hurts
Hey, Kool Thing, come here, sit down beside me
There’s something I go to ask you
I just want to know, what are you gonna do for me?
I mean, are you gonna liberate us girls
From male white corporate oppression?
Tell it like it is!
Huh?
Yeah!
Don’t be shy
Word up!
Fear of a female planet?
Fear of a female planet?
Fear, baby!
I just want you to know that we can still be friends
Let everybody know
Kool Kool Thing, Kool Kool Thing
When you’re a star, I know that you’ll fix everything
Kool Thing sittin’ with a kitty
Now you know you’re sure lookin’ pretty
Rock the beat just a little faster
Now I know you are the master
I don’t want to, I don’t think so
I don’t want to, I don’t think so
Kool Thing walkin’ like a panther
Come on and give me an answer
Kool Thing walkin’ like a panther
What’d he say?
I don’t want to, I don’t think so
I don’t want to, I don’t think so

Songwriters: Kim Gordon, Lee M. Ranaldo, Steven Jay Shelley, Thurston Moore.

The music video for Kool Thing, released on June 4, 1990, was the band’s first for a major label. The video was directed by Tamra Davis. The video focused on Gordon‘s fascination with 1960s radicalism (particularly Patty Hearst and the Black Panthers), and featured the band wearing glam style clothing. The video was stylized after LL Cool J‘s Going Back to Cali video, down to the black-and-white camera and go-go dancers. Gordon initially wanted to wear a beret and carry an Uzi, as a self-described “poseur-leftist girl lusting after Black Panthers concept”. However, Geffen vetoed the plan. Chuck D appeared in the video.
