The Girl Next Door is a American romantic comedy film directed by Luke Greenfield, released on April 9, 2004. It follows a high school senior who falls in love for the first time with the girl next door, but finds the situation becoming complicated after he learns that she is a former pornographic actress.
It stars Emile Hirsch, Elisha Cuthbert, Timothy Olyphant, James Remar, Chris Marquette, and Paul Dano. Filming for The Girl Next Door began on January 11, 2003 in California (in Los Angeles, Long Beach, Santa Clarita and South Pasadena).
Elisha Cuthbert made the film while she was filming the FOX network television series, 24. Because Emile Hirsch was 17 years old during the film’s production, all of his nude scenes were performed by a stunt double.
For the lap dance scene, several pillows were placed between Hirsch and the dancer. Jay Mohr auditioned for the role of Kelly, but was told that the part had gone to Matt Dillon.
It was later given to Timothy Olyphant, who initially passed on the part twice before finally agreeing to accept it. The film received mixed reviews and low theatrical attendance at the time, but over time has gained cult film status.
